Advantages of MOSFETs in Motor Drive Applications

1. Electrical Performance Advantages

Ultra-fast switching speed
As voltage-controlled devices, MOSFETs have no minority carrier storage effect, achieving nanosecond-level switching. They are ideal for high-frequency PWM speed regulation, delivering high motor speed accuracy, fast response and lower noise.

Low conduction loss and heat generation
Featuring low on-resistance (\(R_{ds(on)}\)), MOSFETs produce small voltage drop and low power loss under large current. Their temperature rise is much lower than that of bipolar transistors and conventional IGBTs, simplifying heat dissipation design.

Simple driving with low power consumption
Driven purely by voltage with nearly no driving current required. They can be directly driven by single-chip microcontrollers and logic chips, eliminating complex drive amplifying circuits and reducing peripheral components.

High current carrying capacity
MOSFETs are available in high-current ratings, suitable for medium and high-power DC brushed motors, brushless motors, stepper motors, etc. Parallel connection is easy for current expansion.

2. Circuit & Application Advantages

Strong overload and surge resistance
They have flat current characteristics and can withstand inrush current for a short time, adapting to motor startup surges and stall conditions.

Flexible circuit topology
MOSFETs are widely used to form H-bridges and three-phase full bridges, perfectly matching forward/reverse rotation of DC motors and commutation of brushless motors with mature and universal circuit structures.

High reliability and long service life
Without mechanical contacts, sparks or wear, they far outperform relays and contactors in service life and stability, suitable for long-term continuous operation.

3. Cost & Compatibility Advantages

Cost-effective
MOSFETs have obvious price advantages for motors working at low voltages (24V/48V and below), lowering mass production costs.

Compact package
Most MOSFETs adopt surface-mount or small-size packages, facilitating miniaturization and integration of drive boards for compact devices such as small home appliances, industrial control equipment and vehicle motors.

Supplementary Summary

MOSFETs are the preferred choice for low-voltage DC motors (brushed, brushless and stepper). IGBTs are prioritized for high-voltage and high-power motors. The main limitation of MOSFETs is relatively low withstand voltage, making them less competitive in high-voltage scenarios.
